The Relaxed Sketcher

The 30-day Reset

Thirty days, thirty lessons. Each day the line of that day, plus one technique to go with it — from measuring proportions to why you're better off not erasing. No streaks, no schedule you can 'break': miss a day and you carry on where you were.

Estella's work table: pen, pans and a sketch in progress

How it works

  1. 01You enrol once; the Reset is separate from the membership.
  2. 02One lesson a day: that day's technique, in a few sentences before you begin.
  3. 03A self-check with every lesson: one concrete question to examine your own drawing with.
  4. 04The lesson follows your day number, not the calendar — a missed day costs you no lesson.
  5. 05You tick off your own days — counted on paper, kept here.
  6. 06You share (if you want) your scan on a private wall — and each week Estella writes one note to all participants about what struck her there.
  7. 07A printable workbook with all thirty lessons, to keep beside your table.

What you learn in thirty days

The lessons build on each other. This is the whole arc — you're not buying a surprise.

  1. Week 1 — Looking

Looking longer than you draw, following the edge, negative space, measuring with your pencil.

  2. Week 2 — The line

The continuous line, line weight, the searching line, and why you're better off not erasing.

  3. Week 3 — Form

Ball, box and tube, proportion as a number, ellipses, overlap and foreshortening.

  4. Week 4 — Light and space

Where the light comes from, cast shadow, three tones, hatching and lost edges.

What a day can look like

No made-up examples: these are three real days from the archive, exactly as everyone received them that morning.

  • 4 August

Today you're drawing your coffee cup or tea mug — with your other hand. Look twice as long as you draw.

  • 11 August

Today you're drawing a bunch of keys — using at most twenty lines. Draw the space around it instead of the thing itself.

  • 18 August

Today you're drawing your own non-drawing hand — in exactly ten minutes, slower than you'd like. Leave the mistake in and draw around it.
