Start drawing with no experience

You do not need drawing skills to put a pen on paper. A blank page may feel large, or you may not know what to draw. Choose something small in front of you. This exercise starts with one little part, rather than a whole drawing.

What you need

Ordinary paper and a pen or pencil. You could draw a spoon, a leaf, a key or your own hand. One thing is enough.

  1. 1. Make a first mark

Put a small line somewhere on the paper. The page has begun. There is no right place, and you do not need to remove the mark.

  2. 2. Choose one small part

Look at the end of a spoon, for example. Is its edge straight, curved or almost straight? Draw just that part. You do not yet need to know where everything else will go.

  3. 3. Draw the part beside it

Let your eyes move a little further and make the next line. Sometimes the lines meet, sometimes they do not. If the object grows wider than your paper, part of it can remain outside the picture.

  4. 4. Look without marking your work

After about ten minutes, sit back. Find one line that shows you were looking closely. You do not have to show anyone the drawing. It can simply stay in your sketchbook.

Something to notice

Where did your hand find a movement you had not planned?

If you would like to draw again, come back here or try today's line. Missing a day does not change your place to begin.
